Performances pre 1642
The Known Performances collection has two types of record. One for each known performance and the other for plays that we know were performed by particular companies (date unknown).
Evidence may come from a title page of a printed play that refers to a particular company or theatre; or it might come from a recorded payment for a particular performance. Question marks indicate that the evidence is uncertain. Links enable you to follow early modern actors, companies, theatres, and Read Not Dead performances.
This collection draws heavily on the magisterial British Drama 1533-1642: a Catalogue, by Martin Wiggins in association with Catherine Richardson, OUP, 2012-2020.
